Bridal bras: Things to consider for your big day lingerie

Bridal lingerie is about more than just the garter that goes into the crowd.

You’ve looked through thousands of photos and tried on dozens of gowns. However, you may have overlooked some minor details in your quest for the perfect wedding-day look.

You, know, those necessary, ahem, unmentionables that go beneath the gown.

Lingerie. We’re talking about lingerie. Bridal lingerie, to be exact.

Undergarments serve as the foundation for your outerwear to look as it should. In some cases, they can alter the way your dress fits, so it’s worth investing in these intimates before you start looking for a dress.

Your bridal bra

The bra is the ultimate undergarment, the leading lady of lingerie to which all others play supporting roles. You’ll need a good, supportive bra to keep you comfortable as you walk down the aisle and for hours of dining, dancing, and posing with relatives.

Many bridal boutiques sell decorative bras that are as unique – and nearly as expensive – as the gown itself. While some of these elegant brassieres have unusual proportions that can be quite useful with the right gown, comfort should be your top priority: On your wedding day, you don’t want insufficient support or irritating wires cutting into your sides. Remember, when you take the gown off, you can change into provocative, flimsy lingerie.

Inquire about the store’s return policy before making a purchase. You’ll probably want to try on a few different bras with your gown, so make sure the garment is returnable for a full refund as long as the tags are still attached.

Whatever style you choose, try not to have unrealistic expectations for your bra – or yourself – on your wedding day. Why suffer if it’s too uncomfortable to wear for a five-hour stretch on a normal afternoon?

Panties

Choose panties that are more about comfort than sex appeal, just like you would your bra. (There’s simply no way to move a pair of creeping panties through a wedding gown invisibly!) Use pantyhose with built-in underwear if your gown has an unusually slinky cut or is made of very thin material.

Hosiery

If you want to wear a fancy garter belt with hooks to hold up thigh-high hose, make sure it fits snugly around your waist and won’t show through your gown! The hose’s pressure can pull a cheap, elastic garter belt downward, resulting in wrinkly knees and an evening of futile attempts to hitch up your hose (a task nearly as hard to hide as panty-tugging).

Given the variety of sleek and sexy pantyhose available, a garter belt is largely unnecessary. However, knowing they’re wearing one can make some women feel extra sexy. If you decide to use a garter, make sure you’re comfortable with the inconvenience.

Before your wedding, try on your gown (along with your undergarments) in the presence of a close friend. Once you’re certain that you won’t show more than you intend to show, put it aside and have fun!

Getting the most out of your wedding day shouldn’t be dependent on your lingerie, but it will have an effect on your memories. Take a chance on your styles and do things differently than everyone else. Make your wedding day more memorable for the bride and groom by including small details.
